Almost 200 participants gathered online to participate in the 3rd CEMS Global Flood Forecasting and Monitoring Meeting that was held on 5 and 6 March 2024.
The event featured presentations about CEMS GloFAS and GFM products and services highlighting the recent developments. Furthermore, this year's annual meeting included three keynotes presented on day two that focused on the potential that GloFAS and GFM products have in large scale projects, for example the Africa Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System or the Use of GloFAS products for food security assessment. The third keynote on Water depth estimate and flood extent enhancement using GFM presented a very interesting further development of the flood extent derived within GFM.
As in the previous meetings, there was also a broad spectrum of user applications presented in ignite talks and during the poster session. These contributions are inspiring for both other users and the developers of the service.
All the presentations and posters are available for download from the event page [link].
Being a global event, the GloFAS and GFM annual meeting could gather participants from all over the world to present and discuss recent advancements and findings within the peer-group of GloFAS and GFM users.
Below figure illustrates the countries from where people have joint over the two days of the meeting - indeed a global community! (Indicatively, the darker the color, the larger the number of participants - actual numbers are omitted to avoid double-counting participants that joined on both days).
The organizers always try to even incorporate interactive features in this online event to make it more than just a webinar. Apart from a question and answer functionality that was actively used throughout the whole meeting, both days were concluded in a more casual session in Gather.Town - a highly interactive space in which the participants were able to browse through posters about GloFAS and GFM applications, meet the presenters of ignite and key-note talks, meet members of CEMS GloFAS and CEMS GFM and freely interact with other participants. The screenshot below shall give an impression that it actually works!
